    These bean bag chairs have been sold nationwide in retail stores including Caldor, F.W. Woolworth, Harts Stores, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Montgomery Ward, Rich's, Sears Roebuck and Co., Toys 'R' Us, and Walmart. Consumers should stop using bean bag chairs with zippers that freely open into the filling and take them away from children IMMEDIATELY.

    Consumers should check the bean bag chairs for a label identifying the manufacturer and call the company's 800 number listed for instructions on repairing bean bag chairs to prevent them from opening.

    Consumers should be aware that bean bag chairs manufactured with a small, T-shaped plastic tab attached to the zipper head are in need of repair.

    Consumers who are not sure whether their bean bag chairs are included in this repair program should call CPSC's toll-free hotline at (800) 638-2772. CPSC is continuing to investigate other manufacturers of zippered bean bag chairs that may have distributed similar products.

  • July 7, 1995, WASHINGTON, D.C.- CPSC and five additional bean bag chairs manufacturers announced the voluntary recall of approximately 142,000 more zippered bean bag chairs. None of the deaths and incidents the CPSC knows of involve bean bag chairs manufactured by the firms listed below.

    These bean bag chairs were sold through small retail specialty shops, catalogs, and educational supply companies. Consumers should check the bean bag chair's label identifying the manufacturer by name or LIC. number and call the company's number listed for instructions on repairing their bean bag chaisr. This recall does not affect bean bag chairs that have been retrofitted to prevent children from freely opening them.

  • April 2, 1996, WASHINGTON, D.C.- CPSC and Meri-Jon Artist Colony of Lexington, N.C., announced a major cooperative repair program for 150,000 zippered bean bag chairs. None of the deaths and incidents the CPSC knows of involved bean bag chairs manufactured by Meri-Jon Artist Colony.

     

    Meri-Jon Artist Colony has sold bean bag chairs nationwide since 1980 at small retail furniture stores. The bean bag chairs, which are sold in a variety of styles and colors, can be identified by the manufacturer's label on the product. Owners of Meri-Jon Artist Colony's bean bag chairs can contact the company at (800) 476-4618 for instructions on repairing their bean bag chairs.

     

    Bean bag chairs manufactured and sold by Meri-Jon Artist Colony with an outer zipper with no pull tab are not affected. This repair program does not affect bean bag chairs that have been retroffitted to prevent children from freely opening them.

 

  • November 1999, AUSTRALIA - ACCC jumps on dangerous bean bag chairs - The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has acted to withdraw two brands of dangerous bean bag chairs from sale.

     

    Some 200 'Hot Tuna' brand bean bag chairs were manufactured and distributed to retailers nationally by Hot Tuna Pty Ltd of Taree, NSW. Also, 'Crumpler' brand bean bag chairs were distributed to retailers in Victoria by Crumpler of Ballarat, Victoria. In both instances the bean bag chairs failed to comply with a mandatory safety standard under the Trade Practices Act 1974 that requires that bean bag chairs, bean bags covers, and packages containing the bean bag filling, must carry a warning. AUSTRALIA ONLY.

     

    They also failed to comply with the requirement that all bean bag chairs and bean bag chairs covers must have a child resistant slide fastener on every opening through which the bean bag filling can be accessed. Consumers should contact the bean bag chairs retailer for either a refund or for corrective alterations. Further information is available at the http://www.accc.gov.au.

  • April 17, 2001, BURLINGTON, VT - In an effort to rid consumer's homes of hazardous products, CPSC launched the fifth national Recall Round-Up to get unsafe products out of people's homes.

     

    CPSC has enlisted the help of the Vermont Department of Health to help publicize the safety campaign. "While you are spring cleaning, check your attic, basement, garage, other storage areas for products that could be hazardous (recalled bean bag chairs)," said Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Jan Carney. "The CPSC can get dangerous products off the shelves of stores, but the challenge is to get them out of homes."

     

    Spring also marks the season when people begin holding garage sales to get rid of their unused items. Don't sell or buy any recalled bean bag chairs.

     

  • April 24, 2002, WV- Baseline Design Bean Bag Chairs Recall in cooperation with the CPSC. West Virginia Attorney General Darrell V. McGraw Jr., urges consumers to check their homes for recalled Baseline Design Bean Bag Chairs.

     

    Despite bean bag chairs recall notices and public warnings, many recalled bean bag chairs remain in consumer's homes. Serious injury and death has occurred when young children inhaled or choked on the small beads that fill the bean bag chairs. Consumers should inspect their Baseline Design bean bag chairs. If the zippers open freely, call 1-800-497-3626 ext. 3046 for repair and replacement instructions.
