1999, AUSTRALIA - ACCC jumps on dangerous bean bag chairs - The Australian
Competition and Consumer Commission has acted to withdraw two brands
of dangerous bean bag chairs from sale.
Some 200 'Hot Tuna' brand bean bag chairs were manufactured and distributed
to retailers nationally by Hot Tuna Pty Ltd of Taree, NSW. Also, 'Crumpler'
brand bean bag chairs were distributed to retailers in Victoria by
Crumpler of Ballarat, Victoria. In both instances the bean bag chairs
failed to comply with a mandatory safety standard under the Trade
Practices Act 1974 that requires that bean bag chairs, bean bags covers,
and packages containing the bean bag filling, must carry a warning.
AUSTRALIA ONLY.
They also failed to comply with the requirement that all bean bag
chairs and bean bag chairs covers must have a child resistant slide
fastener on every opening through which the bean bag filling can be
accessed. Consumers should contact the bean bag chairs retailer for
either a refund or for corrective alterations. Further information

- April
17, 2001, BURLINGTON, VT - In an effort to rid consumer's homes of
hazardous products, CPSC launched the fifth national Recall Round-Up
to get unsafe products out of people's homes.
CPSC has enlisted the help of the Vermont Department of Health to
help publicize the safety campaign. "While you are spring cleaning,
check your attic, basement, garage, other storage areas for products
that could be hazardous (recalled bean bag chairs)," said Vermont
Health Commissioner Dr. Jan Carney. "The CPSC can get dangerous
products off the shelves of stores, but the challenge is to get them
out of homes."
Spring also marks the season when people begin holding garage sales
to get rid of their unused items. Don't sell or buy any recalled bean
bag chairs.
- April
24, 2002, WV- Baseline Design Bean Bag Chairs Recall in cooperation
with the CPSC. West Virginia Attorney General Darrell V. McGraw Jr.,
urges consumers to check their homes for recalled Baseline Design
Bean Bag Chairs.
Despite bean bag chairs recall notices and public warnings, many recalled
bean bag chairs remain in consumer's homes. Serious injury and death
has occurred when young children inhaled or choked on the small beads
that fill the bean bag chairs. Consumers should inspect their Baseline
Design bean bag chairs. If the zippers open freely, call 1-800-497-3626
ext. 3046 for repair and replacement instructions.
